Saturday's Powerball Lottery Jackpot Now Tops $400 Million

No one took home the Powerball prize on Wednesday, pushing the jackpot up to $403 million, one of the largest in history, game officials said.

The next drawing will be held on Saturday after no lottery players matched the numbers - 07 32 41 47 61, with the Powerball 03 - on Wednesday.

The $403 million jackpot prize is the 9th largest-ever Powerball jackpot and the 13th largest jackpot in U.S. history. The prize will increase as more tickets are purchased for Saturday’s draw.

The jackpot has rolled over twice a week since Sept. 17 when an unidentified person matched all six numbers. The odds of doing so are 1 in 292 million.

Powerball is played in 44 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Players can either buy $2 tickets using their own numbers or have them randomly generated by a computer.

If a single winner claims the jackpot on Saturday’s drawing, they would receive at least $403 million over 30 years or $243.8 million in a lump sum payment, before taxes.

The largest ever lottery prize of $1.6 billion was split between three winning tickets in January.

It is one of several games run by the Multi-State Lottery Association, a non-profit owned and operated by member states’ lotteries.

The Mega Millions lottery, also offered by the association, produced the country’s second-largest-ever prize, worth $656 million, in a 2012 drawing.

For every $1 worth of Powerball sales, half goes to prizes, 40 percent to state governments for causes such as education, and 10 percent to retailers who sell the tickets and other administrative costs.

Why Won't Cardone Return My Calls?

When Mike Barco's new steering unit needs to be replaced, he turns to the manufacturer for help. Why can’t he get an answer?

Question: In 2013, I purchased a Cardone rack-and-pinion steering unit for my Honda prior to semi-retiring it. Since then I've driven my sister’s Buick.

Recently, I switched back to the Honda again. I’ve noticed that the unit, which is in virtually new condition, is leaking!

Related: Frequently asked questions about resolving a consumer dispute or complaint.

I only have a one-year warranty on the unit. I've contacted Cardone customer service, but there's nothing they can do. I've tried to reach the main office, hoping to get in touch with Cardone's chief executive. There's no response. Can you help? -- Mike Barco, North Hollywood, Calif.

Answer: Technically, Cardone is correct. Your warranty lasted a year, and once it's up, you have to pay for any repairs. But the company should have also given you a straight answer when you tried to reach one of its executives.

By the way, those executive contacts for Cardone can be found on my consumer advocacy site.

In reviewing your correspondence, it looks as if most of your communication with Cardone happened by phone. I highly recommend you put something like this in an email, detailing any special circumstances. You can always appeal to someone higher up the ladder by forwarding the emails to an executive, if necessary. But stay off the phone.

Your problem, where the warranty runs out even though the product isn't used, comes up from time to time. Warranties were written by lawyers to protect the company, not the customer. In these special circumstances, the company isn't required to help its customers, but should still consider some kind of goodwill gesture. I mean, you hardly used the car and it looks like the steering needs to be replaced.

But the real reason my advocacy team accepted your case is that we felt someone should have responded to your appeal, even if to say "no." It also gave the folks in our research department an excuse to find Cardone's executive contacts, which we did.

Cardone reviewed your case and decided to replace your steering unit. What a great resolution.

Give Thanks to Success - Validate your Unsung Heroes

In a prior post Success: Circumstantial or Choice, I highlighted - Choice not Circumstances determines success.

This applies not just to the determination of ones success, but ones choice to influence success of others. What makes you yourself? DNA? Pre-instincts (acquired subconsciousness)? Knowledge learned in life? The web is filled with 'X ways to influence your child's success', 'traits of successful people', '26 scientific ways your childhood influences your success', etc. There are some good recent posts on gratitude as well by friends Deidre Paknad and Faisal Hoque.

People help people succeed

Motivational speaker Jim Rohn famously said that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. Perhaps true and while linearity can be seductive, the path to success is often non-linear and is a collection of choices, of influences.

Søren Kierkegaard a famous Danish philosopher once said "Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards" and was later cited in a famous Stanford commencement speech by Steve Jobs said "You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future." I was reminded of this phrase again as I celebrated a birthday last weekend and reflected back to the dots and connected them backwards.

Thanksgiving offers a great opportunity to reflect and connect the dots looking backwards. To reach out and thank those that have helped you succeed or nudged you on your path to success, success as to be defined by you. It could be a family member, a co-worker, a founder, a team, a teacher, coach.

'Sometimes it's the very people who no one imagines anything of, who do the things no one can imagine' - Alan Mathison Turing

Validate your unsung heroes.

Thank you for reading and sharing if you are so inclined. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

4 Reasons You Need to Be on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is the largest professional network in the world. Over 467 million people have accounts on the site, and more are joining every day.

Roughly a quarter of these members log in regularly each month, but why? What is the real value of LinkedIn? If these are questions that you have asked then here are four compelling reasons to join and engage on this thriving social network.

1. Grow Your Network

LinkedIn is like a massive, virtual business networking event that is available 24/7. It is an ideal place to find and connect with a wide range of people from prospective employers to peers, customers to creative talent.

Your LinkedIn network can become the most powerful and wide-reaching Rolodex you could possibly imagine, letting you reach out to people to share resources, introduce yourself or ask for help.

You can research suppliers, identify strategic partners or build relationships with influencers in your industry.

2. Raise Exposure for Your Business

As well as posting updates, writing blog posts and sharing your individual expertise in groups on LinkedIn you can also create dedicated pages for your business and products.

Creating a LinkedIn page for your business allows people to find and follow your brand. By doing so they will receive any updates you post on your company page. Updates could include press releases, new products, promotional offers or information about current vacancies.

Knowing who has actively expressed interest in your company by following its LinkedIn page is a great way to identify people to connect with. You may find recruiters, investors, buyers and partners all looking for more information about your business!

One of the most fundamental reasons to build LinkedIn into your online marketing strategy is that leads from this social network have a great conversion rate.

3. Look for Jobs

When it comes time for a career change LinkedIn is an excellent resource. Your profile should act as an online resume, so be sure to complete as much information as possible and keep it up to date.

There are many ways to research available positions. 3 great ways to start are:
●Message key contacts in your network to let them know you are available, and ask about possible vacancies
●Browse LinkedIn's dedicated Jobs portal
●Visit the official LinkedIn page for any brands that are on your list of most desirable companies to work for and look at their Careers section.

Even if you aren't actively looking for a new job, recruiters often use LinkedIn to identify and research strong prospective candidates for vacancies they are trying to fill. Who wouldn't love to get an unsolicited job opportunity to explore or use to negotiate better terms in their current job?

4. Find Talented Employees

LinkedIn has invested greatly in improving their Talent Solutions. From a simple job posting to complete turnkey recruitment the platform is an affordable way to source candidates for any job openings you have.

You can also choose to be more undercover in your search. Use LinkedIn advanced search to find people with desirable keywords and titles in their profiles. If you are active on the site and regularly read people's updates and engage in relevant groups then the chances are that you will come across individuals who make a positive impression on you.

When viewing people's profiles you can add Notes or Tags to let you organize your shortlist of candidates for easier reference.

Now is a great time to get more active on LinkedIn. The majority of businesses still don't have a strong brand presence or a defined strategy for LinkedIn marketing. With new features and functionality being added all the time, the usefulness of the network is only likely to increase. Make sure your business is ahead of the crowd.

Quality in Digital Advertising: Why We Need A Better User Experience Now

John Murphy, VP of Marketplace Quality, OpenX

Think back, way back, to the early 2000s. Odds are you remember the home page takeovers and painfully irrelevant pop-ups that interfered with your browsing incessantly. We've made a lot of progress over the last decade and a half but even as we succeed at finding new ways to improve digital advertising, new threats have emerged. Malware. Forced redirects. Auto-play audio and video. All of these threats weaken the consumer experience, and ultimately drive them away from publishers.

At many of the biggest advertising events this year, including Cannes and Advertising Week NY, industry players expressed concerns about ad quality and performance. To create an improved user experience that leads to a better ROI, publishers, brands, and technology partners in the middle must all deliver better ads — ones that aren't intrusive and disruptive, but engaging and highly relevant to consumers' current wants and needs.

Zero In On Ad Quality

To some extent, ad quality is subjective; good ads are in the eye of the beholder (or in this case, the consumer). But clearly there are forms of advertising that are objectively bad for the user experience. Display ads that block content or are unsafe (like malware) are plainly unacceptable. They interfere with the publisher-user value exchange, and that can create negative feelings toward both the site and brand.

Another aspect of online advertising that consumers tend to scrutinize is speed. Thanks to fast-loading apps, consumers’ expectations for online and mobile ad experience are constantly rising. It's one of the reasons why many users have resorted to employing ad blockers. To your audience, ads that slow down their experience can be as objectionable as those that might put them at risk. The ultimate goal for sellers and buyers should be to create engaging messaging while also improving ad performance: delivering relevant ads fast. Publishers and technology platforms can help indirectly by educating advertisers on the importance of knowing the weight of an ad and how it could impact load times and user experience.

Mitigate the Effects of Malware

Malicious software is a blight on the digital marketing landscape that continues to spread. Converting publishers from passive players to active participants in improving ad quality and getting full industry buy-in will help to incapacitate malware, but it isn't enough. For example, if a publisher is using the latest browser and operating system, the risk of an attack is much lower, but with programmatic now representing more than two-thirds of all US digital display ad spending, malware can target systems that aren't up to date.

The solution? Many premium publishers are now working with monitoring companies like The Media Trust, on both security and user experience. After that, sites should align themselves with a trustworthy monetization partner for their targeted programmatic campaigns, as this approach protects publishers and brands alike.

The Future of Advertising is Bright

Many wonder what the future has in store. Can we really do enough to effect change? The fact is that today countless publishers aren't fully aware of the types of ads that are running on their sites, how these ads affect page load times, and how they might be degrading the user experience. This lack of insight dramatically reduces their ability to improve the advertising experience, and will continue to do so in the months and years to come.

It's important, therefore, that publishers become active, informed participants in improving ad quality. Take a closer look at what you're putting out into the online world, and prioritize quality assurance and optimization to create a better ad experience for all. The adtech industry can help this along by empowering publishers with better controls and greater visibility into ads that are running to ensure that users are satisfied and that the integrity of the ad marketplace is preserved.

Since the early days of digital publishing, publishers have grappled with the issue of trust. In order to build a loyal audience that's of value to their advertisers, publishers must deliver appealing, informative content that consumers can rely on. At the same time, to maintain their user base and keep consumers coming back, publishers have to serve ads that accurately reflect audience preferences and behavior.

The common thread that ties these two efforts together is quality: quality content, quality ads, and a high-quality user experience. Achieving this doesn't fall to individual publishers, brands, or ad exchanges. Rather, it's a mission for the industry as a whole.

So let's get started.

5 Ways Small Businesses Can Prepare for the Holidays

By Jackie Zimmermann

The doorbuster deals are set and the Black Friday ads are out, perennial indicators that the holiday shopping season is in full swing. The National Retail Federation predicts $655.8 billion in holiday sales this season, up 3.6% from 2015.

In addition to securing enough working capital and inventory, you'll want to prepare for the rush in other ways. NerdWallet asked Steve Goldberg, president of retail consulting firm The Grayson Company, for tips on how to get started.

1. Advertise early

To attract early shoppers, your marketing needs to be in front of the right consumers at the right time. According to a survey by the NRF in the first week of November, 56% of respondents had already started buying gifts.

But hope is not lost if you're getting a late start, Goldberg says. Small-business owners can react more nimbly than larger stores, he says. "They can make decisions without having to wait -- that's their secret sauce."

There's still time to use free, customizable advertising for your storefront, website and social media to promote Small-Business Saturday -- an initiative started by American Express in 2010 to encourage shopping locally the day after Black Friday. Nationwide, the event brought in $16.2 billion for independent retailers and restaurants in 2015, making it the most successful Small-Business Saturday to date.

2. Coordinate employees

Scheduling your employees during the holidays can be an absolute nightmare. Amid travel requests and family obligations, you still have a store to staff and a business to run. Make the idea of working the holiday a little more attractive by offering incentives or increased compensation.

You can consider hiring seasonal help, Goldberg says, but it depends on what roles you need to staff. It's relatively easy to fill positions with responsibilities like working a register, wrapping gifts or stocking shelves. But if you own a restaurant or you provide a service with highly specialized skill sets, like custom framing, you'll need to decide whether you feel comfortable leaving your business's reputation in the hands of people who aren't familiar with the product or service.

"The optimal scenario is to have a trained seasonal staff willing to come back year after year," Goldberg says.

3. Improve your website

This year, half of consumers plan to shop online for gifts, according to a Deloitte holiday survey. You'll want to make sure your web business can handle increased traffic from online shoppers, and that your site is easy to navigate and up to date.

Consider taking advantage of a "buy online, pick up in store" feature, an option that nearly half of shoppers said they were interested in using this year, according to a survey by Accenture."It's definitely a feature and function the small-business owner can use as leverage to compete with bigger stores," Goldberg says. "It's a wonderful, seamless way to take care of customers."

An added benefit: Shoppers end up in your physical store, boosting the chances of a spontaneous purchase. In fact, 71% of consumers in the Accenture survey said they'd likely make additional purchases when heading to a store to pick up an item bought online.

But a word to the wise: If you're already behind on holiday planning and prep, now is not the time to alter your e-commerce platform, Goldberg says. Instead, wait for the busy holiday season to wrap up before dedicating time to set up the feature.

4. Review the store's layout

Throughout the season, take inventory of your store's layout. If you notice hard-to-reach items, congestion around displays or other pain points for customers, address them immediately.

Checkout lines are especially important; not only do you want to make sure there is ample room for shoppers, but you should also add displays to encourage last-minute purchases. In particular, showcase items people tend to forget to pick up in their shopping rush, like wrapping materials or gift cards, to help save them an extra trip.

5. Decorate strategically

When setting up displays, you want to be careful not to block a customer's sightline, Goldberg says. This goes for window decorations and product displays. Place products you want to showcase in the front of the store, but make sure they don't block a customer's ability to look beyond. And if a product is on display, make sure it's available and easy to find.

Don't forget: Connect with the community

The holidays, in particular, are an excellent time for business owners to connect with their customers on a deeper level, Goldberg says. Remember names, give smiles and offer extra help.

"That doesn't cost a thing," Goldberg says, "and it's such a gigantic way for small businesses to separate themselves from their large competitors."

3 Zen Moves to Conquer Workday Hell

It completely sucks when your work day is filled with stress. And your job title doesn't matter - we all have days that completely suck the life from us. It doesn't matter if you're self-employed or a corporate titan. We all have days from hell where we just want to run away...

Here're a few eye-opening statistics from Office Vibe that explain how much work stress we have on a daily basis:

  • Annual costs to employers for stress-related health care and sick days is over300 billion
  • 77% of workers have physical symptoms and 73% have mental symptoms from stress
  • 33% of workers believe they are living with extreme stress
  • 60% of U.S. workers are so unhappy at their jobs that they would prefer a new career
  • 87% of workers worldwide are emotionally disconnected from their workplaces, which decreases productivity by 10%

Find Ways to Laugh

In the Buddhist philosophy, there's a legend of the Laughing Monk. He " was famous for handing out sweets and small toys he took from his cloth bag, after which he would put the bag down, stare up at the sky and start to laugh madly. His laughter proved to be very contagious indeed and before long all who had gathered around him would start to laugh as well." Laughing is actually considered an important step on the path to enlightenment.

Laughter and fun are also important in the workplace. Close work friendships boost employee satisfaction by 50%, while people with work BFF's are seven times more likely to be more engaged at work. You can create some elaborate games (like the Nurf Battle below) or you can just have an ice cream party. You can do something silly and dress up your karate school's BOB the punching bag for Halloween.

The idea is to create a way to laugh, even on the most stressful days.

Try Business Edited

Leo Babauta, from Zen Habits, advises us to make small changes for big results. He explains that:

"With each step, my mood improves. One step at a time, I help myself feel better. These are small steps, taken one at a time, with as much presence as I can muster. And they make all the difference in the world."

My business, like millions of others, almost didn't survive the recession. I got very, very good at scraping by. It wasn't fun, but it was an important lesson. We weren't the same when we crawled out on the other side. Being bigger wasn't the goal. Buying unnecessary or flashy things seemed ridiculous. Cutting out everything we didn't need to survive allowed my business to grow in new and unexpected ways. It was actually a blessing for us.

Start applying a minimalist philosophy to your business. It will decrease your stress levels and help you improve profits.

Here're a few things to help you achieve Business Edited:

  • Embrace technology that helps you integrate and organize (think iPad over PC's)
  • Choose sustainable and local whenever you can
  • Create a leaner office space
  • Choose dual purpose items
  • Don't purchase "stuff" - purchase only what you truly need
  • Get rid of paper - bills, business cards, etc.
  • Learn to work mobile from anywhere
  • Start saying NO whenever you can
  • Cut out stress-inducing clients

Actively Work at It

Now it's time to get deep.

In The Tao of Pooh, Benjamin Hoff says:

"Wisdom, Happiness, and Courage are not waiting somewhere out beyond sight at the end of a straight line; they're part of a continuous cycle that begins right here. They're not only the ending, but the beginning as well."

Many of us are under the false pretense that we are working towards our best lives. Except that we're living right now and may never reach that destination. Instead, start actively creating the kind of life you want regardless of your stressful job. Sandra Pawula, from Always Well Within, shares some of her top Zen Work Habits:

Start my day by setting an intention: "May my work and whatever I do today benefit as many people as possible."

  • Pause when I begin to feel overwhelmed or stressed.
  • Spend time in nature everyday.
  • Take evenings and the better part of the weekend off.
  • Celebrate my accomplishments.
  • Always be gentle with myself.
  • Practice a formal session of mindfulness meditation.

The Fight for a Zen Workday

I understand that it seems almost impossible to achieve a Zen mindset in the middle of your chaotic day. But you'll need to keep working unless you're independently wealthy (I'm not - yet!). So the question then becomes do I keep being miserable and stressed at work, or do I try something new?

I'm an advocate of trying something different. Maybe even something that sounds crazy. Can laughter help you find a little peace in your day. Absolutely! Can you streamline your day so you're not so overwhelmed? Of course! Can you change your mindset to something more Zen-focused?

Probably not every day or all the time. But what do you have to lose?
